But first he heads to the Land of Waves for a dangerous mission rescuing hostages from a top secret airship. There he confronts a ninja whose heart is frozen by tragedy. Having lost both his friend’s eye and his greatest abilities, can Kakashi really protect anyone? What is the true meaning of the will of fire gained in the distant heavens? Kakashi finds these answers and more as he opens the door to a new ninja era.

Manga author/artist Masashi Kishimoto was born in 1974 in rural Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Like many kids, he was first inspired to become a manga artist in elementary school when he read Dragon Ball. After spending time in art school, he won the Hop Step Award for new manga artists with his story, Karakuri. After considering various genres for his next project, Kishimoto decided on a story steeped in traditional Japanese culture. His first version of NARUTO, drawn in 1997, was a one-shot story about fox spirits; his final version, which debuted in Japan in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, quickly became the most popular ninja manga in the world. The series would also spawn multiple anime series, movies, novels, video games and more. Having concluded the series in late 2014, Masashi Kishimoto has kept himself busy this year with the side story, Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring, and writing the story for the latest NARUTO movie, BORUTO: NARUTO THE MOVIE, both of which focus on the title character's son, Boruto.

VIZ Media is the North American master licensor for NARUTO and publishes the bestselling NARUTO manga series in print and digitally and also distributes the NARUTO and NARUTO SHIPPUDEN anime series and feature films. Additional information on NARUTO is available at www.Naruto.com.

The Golden Cane Warrior / Pendekar Tongkat Emas
Written and directed by Ifa Isfansya
Indonesia, 2014, 111 minutes

The Golden Cane Warrior is a very fine martial arts drama from Indonesia. It debuts today, Tuesday, November 3rd on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD from Well Go USA Entertainment.

The film begins with a voice-over  describing the true use of a warriors skills. Not to be able to kill, but "to be able to defend the weak and powerless." In other words, the true warrior uses his -- or her -- skills to benefit mankind.

Merah Dara (Eva Celia Latjuba

The speaker, we soon learn, is Cempaka (Christinne Hakim, Eat Pray Love and Merantau). She is the elderly and highly respected woman who heads Golden Cane House. (Note that the "cane" is what would more commonly be described as a staff.) She has four students. Merah Dara (Eva Celia Latjuba, Jamila and the President) is the younger of two females. Day Gerhana (Tara Basro, Killers) is the older female. Kala Biru (Reza Rahadian, The Mirror Never Lies) is the oldest of the four, and he is regarded as the most able student. These three were the children of rivals Cempaka was forced to kill. The final student is Angin (Ariia Kusumah), a young boy who had been abandoned and who reminds Cempaka of her greatest sin, which is eventually revealed.

Feeling the approach of death, Cempaka announces her choice of a successor and takes this student away from the small compound to pass on the ultimate move, Golden Cane Encircles the Earth. She also takes along one of the other disciples.

Kala Biru (Reza Rahadian)

But the remaining two are not at all pleased by Cempaka's decision and both agree that one of them is them should receive the Golden Cane. They plot to kill their master, obtain the Golden Cane and blame the two for these dastardly deeds.

The two students who went with Cempaka must seek the knowledge of Naga Putih, who knows how to perform the Golden Cane Encircles the Earth move, overcome their own limitations, avenge their master's death, and regain possession of the Golden Cane.

Angin (Ariia Kusumah)

Thus, The Golden Cane Warrior is another revenge film that utilizes the "you killed my master" trope. But it is a very superior one, and not just because of the fine work by action director Xiong Xin Xin. More to the film's credit is Ishansya's fine script, which truly has heart.

Disc Specs:

To commemorate the death of the legendary Japanese actor Ken Takakura a year ago, Japan Society has chosen this cherished classic from award-winning director Yoji Yamada as the Monthly Classic film for November. It is based on a story about a man's insecure homecoming by Pete Hamill, the same story that inspired the 1973 hit song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" by the group Tony Orlando and Dawn. Thus it was also responsible for the families of many military personnel returning during the Vietnam War period to tie yellow ribbons outside their homes to show that they were eager for their loved ones safe return. Several years ago it was made into another film -- also called The Yellow Handkerchief (2008)-- directed by Udayan Prasad and starring William Hurt, Maria Bello and Kristen Stewart.

Yamada's version begins with Kinya Hanada (Tetsuya Takeda) quitting his job and taking his prized possession -- a red Mazda hatchback -- to Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands. There he hooks up with -- and tries to put the moves on -- Akemi Ogawa (Kaori Momoi), a young woman whose job is serving lunches on trains and who has come to the island to get away from the memory of the boyfriend who cheated on her.

Perhaps twenty minutes or more into the film, the pair meets Takakura's character Yûsaku Shima, who has just been released from prison after serving several years for a serious crime. Shima is older and wiser than the other two; he is also rather sad and wistful. In a series of flashbacks, and later in an extended expository scene, we learn his back story and come to understand why he is conflicted about being driven back to the town of Yubari where he used to live and work and where someone he once loved may or may not still be there.

There's really not any doubt about how the film will end, but that doesn't keep it from being incredibly effective. Touching and sweetly comic, the film swept the first Japan Academy Prize ceremony with wins in nearly every category. Even the hard-hearted should come to Friday evening's screening prepared with tissues or a handkerchief of their own. Preferably a yellow one.

Sales Team 2 intern Mirae (actress KO Ah-sung)
Office / O piseu

Screenplay by CHOI Yun-jin
South Korea, 2015, 111 minutes
When: Friday, November 6, 2015 at 6:30 PM
Where: Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI)
36-01 35th Avenue, Astoria, Queens, NY
New York Premiere

Office politics turns deadly in this terrific thriller from first time director Director Hong Won-chan. This evening at 6:30 PM, the film will be the opening night presentation of The 13th Annual New York Korean Film Festival. Director Hong and star Ko Ah-sung will be present, and the screening will be followed by a reception in the Museum lobby and cafe.

After leaving work one evening, a member of Sales Team 2 at Cheil F&B commits a heinous crime, is captured on CCTV returning to the office, but is not seen leaving it. In the following days other members of the team die and the police are hard pressed to find the culprit.

Mirae (actress KO Ah-sung) is an intern assigned to the team and the only member of it who had a good relationship with the murderer. However, the same office politics that led one person to commit murder also weighs heavily on her as she desperately seeks to obtain a permanent position at the company.

Tension mounts as the killer continues to elude capture and the body count rises higher and higher.

Director HONG was the screenwriter for Confession of Murder (2012), The Yellow Sea (2010), The Scam (2009), and The Chaser (2007—a selection at Cannes). Office marks his most auspicious directorial debut.

Born on August 10, 1992, KO Ah-sung started acting at an early age and played the memorable role of the daughter in BONG Joon-ho’s The Host (2006). Her film credits include The Beauty Inside (2015), Thread of Lies (2014), Snowpiercer (2013, also directed by BONG), Duet (2012), After the Banquet (2009), A Brand New Life (2009), Radio Dayz (2008), and The Happy Life (2007). Her performance in Office is nothing less than spectacular.

The film is part murder mystery, part office drama, part horror story and 100% thrilling. Not to be missed.

This crime thriller (listed at IMDB as Clandestine Zero Line) focuses on the rivalry of two journalists who work for different papers. One of them is utterly unscrupulous. He sells out friends, sex partners and informers after they've helped him get a scoop and are no longer of use to him. The other takes the high road, even if it means coming in second with the story. The two are brought together in the course of investigating a drug smuggling and human trafficking operation in this dark urban tale.

One of the many B-movies Suzuki made for Nikkatsu, the script and acting of Smashing the O-Line are both less than stellar. But it's certainly worth seeing, especially for Suzuki aficionados.

AsianCineFest Rating: 2.5 out of 4 stars; recommended, but not with great enthusiasm.

Assassination
Directed by CHOI Dong-hoon
South Korea, 2015, 140 minutes
When: Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 8:55 PM
Where: Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI)
36-01 35th Avenue, Astoria, Queens, NY

Set primarily in 1933, when Korea was a colony of Japan, Assassination tells the tale of three Koreans tasked by the Korean Provisional Government with a deadly mission. The three are sharpshooter Ahn Okyun (actress Gianna Jun, a.k.a. JUN Ji-hyun, Blood: The Last Vampire, The Thieves), Chu Sang-ok  (also known as "Big Gun"), and Hwang Duk-am (CHOI Deok-moon, The Admiral). Their targets are Japanese general Kawaguchi Mamoru, who led the massacre of over 3,000 Koreans in Manchuria, and Kang In-guk, the leading pro-Japanese lapdog.

Ahn expects the operation to take five minutes and for the three to come back alive. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry because there is a traitor within the ranks of the Korean Provisional government. He has arranged for a team of hit men, "Hawaii Pistol (HA Jung-woo, Kundo: Age of the Rampant) and his partner (played by OH Dal-soo, Oldboy, The Attorney).

Director CHOI Dong-hoon's is perhaps best know in the West for his 2012 hit The Thieves, which was Korea’s biggest box office hit of that year. His other films are The Big Swindle (2004), Tazza: The High Rollers )2006) and Woochi (2009). Gianna Jun and LEE Jung-jae, who stars as resistance fighter Captain Yem in Assassination, both starred in The Thieves.

Assassination is an beautiful period piece with great acting, opulent sets and terrific action sequences, especially a lengthy shoot-out at a wedding. It has exciting plot twists and makes for great entertainment.

AsianCineFest Rating: 4 out of 4 stars; most highly recommended.

This screening of Assassination is part of The 13th Annual New York Korean Film Festival.

Soon after businessman Junpei Ueki returns to Japan after two years in Hong Kong, he mysteriously vanishes. His daughter Keiko enlists the aid of her boyfriend Shotaro, who just happens to be a newspaper reporter, to help locate him. Although the father returns in a few days claiming that he'd gone to a spa after his retirement party, Shotaro can't help but thinking that something's not quite right with this explanation. Like a dog with his bone, Shotaro relentlessly pursues leads he's uncovered, leading him deeper and deeper into a world of suicides -- or are they murders? -- and drug smuggling, all seemingly related to the suspicious Sun God sect.

Like Smashing the 0-Line (also being shown today), The Sleeping Beast Within is an urban crime tale that Suzuki directed for Nikkatsu. But the acting and screenplay of Sleeping are a cut above those in Smashing.

AsianCineFest rating: 3 out of 4 stars; solidly recommended.

Hwang Jung-min as Detective Seo Do-cheol
Veteran
Directed by RYOO Seung-wan
South Korea, 2015, 123 minutes
When: Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 7:45 PM
Where: Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI)
36-01 35th Avenue, Astoria, Queens, NY
U.S. Festival Premiere

Veteran is the latest offering from the highly talented South Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan (The City of Violence, The Berlin File). It's a policier with plenty of action that also has a lot of deft comic touches.

Hwang Jung-min (New World, Ode to My Father) stars as Seo Do-cheol, a veteran detective who works out of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. He's about as straight an arrow of a law enforcement officer as you'll ever come across. He also moonlights as a consultant for a detective drama on television.

We first meet him as he brings down an auto theft ring, in an action scene somewhat reminiscent of the premiere episode of Sammo Hung's American television series Marshal Law. Do-cheol is quite adept at dealing out a fistful of whoop-ass. But he also has a serious and tender side, especially when it comes to friends, such as Bae, a truck driver who assisted in bringing down the higher ups in the auto theft operation.

Cho Tae-oh (Yoo Ah-in), seated, gets advice from his main advisor

After Bae is victimized by a sub-contractor of a huge corporation, Do-cheol comes up against Cho Tae-oh (Yoo Ah-in, Tough as Iron). Tae-oh is the son of the chairman of the corporation (Song Yung-chang, The Attorney and The Good, the Bad, the Weird). With daddy under investigation, Tae-oh is likely to take over the business. His only problem is that he's a violence-prone psychopathic drug user! But having well-connected friends in politics and the upper echelons of the police force, he seems all but immune to arrest and prosecution.

The confrontation between the irresistible force of detective Seo Do-cheol's righteousness and Cho Tae-oh's immovable object of a protected, crazed corporate maniac makes for great viewing. And the numerous comic touches really make the mix all the more enjoyable.

Hwang Jung-min gives a wonderfully modulated performance. He's tough in the action scenes, funny when called for, and touching when need be. He's supported by a wonderful cast that includes: Oh Dal-su (Oldboy, A Bloody Aria, Hindsight) as Team Leader Oh; Jang Yoon-ju, who makes her film debut as Miss Bong, a high-flying police officer; and Yoo Hae-jin (Tazza: The High Rollers, The Pirates) as Choi Sang-moo, Tae-oh's cousin and chief adviser.

AsianCineFest Rating: 3.5 out of 4 stars; very, very, very highly recommended.

This screening of Veteran is part of The 13th Annual New York Korean Film Festival

He's done well so far, but Naruto knows he must train harder than ever and leaves his village for intense training that will push him to his limits. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN begins two and a half years later, when Naruto returns to find that everyone has been promoted up the ninja ranks – except him. Sakura’s a medic ninja, Gaara’s advanced to Kazekage, and Kakashi… well he remains the same. But pride isn’t necessarily becoming of a ninja, especially when Naruto realizes that Sasuke never returned from his search for Orochimaru. Plus, the mysterious Akatsuki organization is still an ever-present danger. As Naruto finds out more about the Akatsuki’s goals, he realizes that nothing in his universe is as it seems. Naruto is finding that he’s older, but will he also prove wiser and stronger?

VIZ Media publishes the bestselling NARUTO manga series in print and digitally and also distributes the NARUTO and NARUTO SHIPPUDEN anime series and feature films. Additional information on NARUTO is available at www.Naruto.com.
